After being sent to the hospital earlier in the month with double pneumonia, it was in the latter part of February that reports started to emerge indicating that the pope was making preparations for his own death. Bronchitis was another condition that he was being treated for at the time.
During his time in the hospital, he was visited by a great number of dignitaries, including the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, who stated that the Pope was “alert and reactive” as he always was.

Francis, when he was younger, suffered from pleurisy, which is an inflammation of the chest membranes that is typically brought on by an infection. As a result of this condition, he had a portion of one of his lungs removed.
The Vatican said at the time that Pope Francis had been complaining of breathing problems in the days preceding up to his hospitalization; nevertheless, he did not have COVID at the time. According to reports, after the patient arrived at the hospital, tests ruled out the possibility of heart issues or pneumonia.
